Summer Car Care: Protect Your Paint and Interior from Sun Damage

Summer Car Care: Protect Your Paint and Interior from Sun Damage

Why Summer Is Surprisingly Hard on Your Car

Most car owners worry about winter — road salt, grit and freezing rain. But the long, bright days of a Dutch summer can be just as damaging, only more quietly. UV radiation breaks down paint and plastics, heat bakes contaminants onto your panels, and the warm months bring a steady assault of insects, tree sap, pollen and bird droppings. If your car spends the day parked in the sun outside your home or office in Alphen aan den Rijn, it's absorbing more punishment than you might think.

The good news: a little seasonal care goes a long way. Here's how to keep your car looking its best from May through September.

Wash More Often — and More Carefully

In summer, contaminants are more aggressive. Bird droppings and bug splatter contain acids that etch into clear coat within hours when baked by the sun, leaving permanent marks if left too long. Aim to rinse your car every one to two weeks, and deal with droppings and sap as soon as you spot them.

A few rules to wash safely:

  • Never wash in direct sunlight. Water and soap dry too fast, leaving water spots and streaks. Work in the shade or early in the morning.
  • Use the two-bucket method — one for soapy water, one to rinse your mitt — to avoid dragging grit across the paint.
  • Use a dedicated car shampoo, not dish soap, which strips protective layers.
  • Dry with a clean microfibre towel to prevent hard-water spots, which are especially common with our region's mineral-rich tap water.

Protect the Paint Before the Sun Does

Washing removes dirt, but it doesn't shield your paint. UV light slowly oxidises clear coat, dulling colour and causing that chalky, faded look on older cars. A protective layer is your best defence.

You have three main options, from least to most durable:

  • Wax — affordable and easy, lasts six to eight weeks. Fine if you enjoy reapplying often.
  • Paint sealant — synthetic, lasts four to six months, great for a full summer.
  • Ceramic coating — a semi-permanent layer that bonds to the clear coat, lasts years, and makes water and contaminants bead and slide off. It's the gold standard for hands-off protection.

If your paint already shows swirl marks or oxidation, a paint correction before coating restores depth and gloss so the protection goes on a flawless surface. This is exactly the kind of work our team handles on-site, so you don't have to drop your car off anywhere.

Don't Forget the Interior

Sunlight does its worst damage where you can't easily wash it off: the dashboard, door cards and seats. UV dries out and cracks plastics and leather, and fades upholstery over time.

To protect your cabin through summer:

  • Use a windscreen sunshade when parked — it dramatically lowers cabin temperature and shields the dash.
  • Apply a UV-protectant dressing to plastic and vinyl trim every few weeks.
  • Condition leather seats to stop them drying and cracking in the heat.
  • Vacuum regularly — sand and crumbs from beach trips and picnics act like sandpaper on upholstery and carpets.

A professional interior clean a couple of times over summer keeps everything fresh and removes the build-up that household products can't reach.

Mind the Wheels, Tyres and Glass

Brake dust bonds harder in heat, so clean wheels with a dedicated pH-neutral wheel cleaner before it bakes on. Dress tyres to slow the cracking that UV and heat accelerate. And keep glass clean inside and out — glare off a hazy windscreen is a real safety issue, especially in low evening sun.

A Smart Summer Routine

You don't need to do everything at once. A simple rhythm works:

  • Weekly: quick rinse, remove any droppings or sap, wipe the glass.
  • Monthly: thorough wash, then check your protection with the water-beading test.
  • Twice a season: a full detail — decontamination, protection top-up and interior refresh.

If beading has stopped and water sheets flat across the bonnet, your protection has worn off and it's time to reapply.
