7 Mistakes Car Owners Make When Washing Their Car

Are You Washing Your Car Wrong?
Washing your car seems simple enough. But the truth is, most car owners unknowingly damage their paint every time they wash. Those swirl marks and fine scratches you see in sunlight? They're almost always caused by improper washing. Here are the seven most common mistakes — and how to avoid them.
1. Using Dish Soap
This is one of the most widespread myths. "Dish soap cuts grease, so it must be great for cars." Wrong. Dish soap is designed to strip oils — which means it strips your wax, sealant, and even attacks the clear coat over time. Always use a dedicated pH-neutral car shampoo.
2. Washing in Direct Sunlight
Washing your car when the sun is beating down causes soap and water to dry on the surface before you can rinse it off. The result? Water spots and chemical etching that can be difficult or impossible to remove without polishing.
Tip: Wash in shade or during cooler parts of the day — early morning or late afternoon.
3. Using a Single Bucket
The single-bucket method is a recipe for scratches. You dip your mitt into dirty water, pick up grit, and scrub it across your paint. The two-bucket method (one with soap, one with clean rinse water) is the minimum standard. A grit guard at the bottom of each bucket is even better.
4. Using the Wrong Tools
Sponges and old towels are paint-destroying tools. Sponges have flat surfaces that trap dirt and drag it across your paint. Old towels have rough fibers that create micro-scratches.
Use instead:
- A high-quality microfiber wash mitt
- Plush microfiber drying towels
- Separate mitts for wheels and body
5. Skipping the Pre-Rinse
Rubbing a dry or dusty surface with a wash mitt is like using sandpaper on your paint. Always pre-rinse your car thoroughly to remove loose dirt and debris before making contact with a mitt.
Even better: use a snow foam or pre-wash spray to loosen dirt before the contact wash.
6. Letting Your Car Air Dry
"It'll dry on its own" is a common lazy approach that leads to water spots. Tap water contains minerals that leave deposits when they evaporate. These spots can etch into the clear coat if left long enough.
Always dry your car immediately after washing using a clean microfiber drying towel or a dedicated car dryer.
7. Neglecting Wheels and Tires
Many car owners either skip wheel cleaning entirely or use the same mitt they use on the body. Wheels are covered in brake dust, road grime, and tar — extremely abrasive contaminants. Using the same mitt on your paint afterward transfers all of that.
Always clean wheels first with a dedicated wheel brush and separate bucket.
