Reduced Washing Frequency

In cold, wet weather, most car owners wash their cars less often. This allows salt, grime, and acidic contaminants like bird droppings and tree sap to sit on the paint for extended periods — causing more etching and damage than in summer.

Winter Car Protection: What to Do Before the Cold Arrives

Applied in autumn, it will protect your car throughout the cold months.

Condition rubber seals. Door, window, and boot seals become brittle in cold weather and can crack or fail. Rubber conditioner keeps them supple and prevents leaks.

Switch to rubber floor mats. Rubber mats are far more effective than fabric at containing the salt, water, and mud that gets tracked in during winter.

Maintaining Winter Car Protection Through the Season

Wash regularly — at least every two weeks. This feels counterintuitive in cold weather, but regular washing removes salt before it causes lasting damage. Focus particularly on wheel arches and lower panels.

Rinse the undercarriage every wash. Salt accumulates heavily underneath the car where you can't see it.

Address chips and scratches quickly. Every paint chip is a potential rust entry point in winter. Touch up chips promptly to prevent the freeze-thaw cycle from making them worse.

Keep the interior dry. A small dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing product in the cabin helps prevent condensation and musty smells.
